How Do You Know If You're in Ketosis? We'll Show You!

What Does it Mean to "Be in Ketosis"?

Getting into ketosis is, basically, the whole point is a ketogenic diet. By the way, "ketosis" is just the fancy word scientists and doctors use to say that your body is now burning fat cells for energy instead of the carbohydrates you eat. When your body is in ketosis, it can lead to a plethora of health benefits that you simply cannot get on the type of heavy carbohydrate diet that most "nutrition experts" recommend. And, yes, that's even if your carbs come from healthier sources, like whole grains.

In full-blown ketosis, you may experience:

  1. A natural curbing of your appetite. You'll be able to eat fewer calories without hardly even thinking about it, making your weight loss virtually effortless.
  2. Fat loss, not just weight loss. When your body can't get energy from carbs, it burns off your stored fat to keep you going.
  3. Abdominal fat loss, on top of that! Carrying a disproportionate amount of fat around your abdomen can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and worse.
  4. Better heart health. Ketosis lowers blood triglyceride levels, lowers your blood pressure, and increases good cholesterol.
  5. Ketosis improves your insulin response, which can help prevents diseases such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
  6. Being in ketosis feeds your brain the fuel it needs to run at optimal capacity, and can even alleviate symptoms of some brain disorders.

How to Know If You're in Ketosis

Being in ketosis can be a wonderful thing. If you are very, very deep into ketosis, there are some obvious signs that can confirm your status. But if you're only in a light or moderate state of ketosis, you might not even notice at all! So be on the lookout for these symptoms if you want to get a good idea of whether or not your body is adapting to The Ketogenic Diet:

  • Better focus and higher energy levels - Of course, this may take a little bit of time to experience in full force while your body is adjusting to your new diet. But once it kicks in, the blood sugar spikes and dips of the past which wreaked havoc on your energy levels and performance will be gone for good. You'll be running at 100% all day long, all day strong when your body is running on fat for energy instead of sugar.
  • Rapid weight loss - The key word here is "weight", not necessarily "fat". But don't worry, the fat loss will come if you stick to it! The reason most people drop so much weight during the early days of their ketogenic diet is because it takes four grams of water to store one gram of carbohydrate fuel in your body. When your body transitions into ketosis, those carbs get cleared out, and the water along with them. With those carbs gone, your body starts learning to burn fat for energy instead.
  • Fewer and less intense hunger cravings - When your body is in ketosis, your hunger hormones (specifically, ghrelin and leptin) fall back into balance, as opposed to constantly fluctuating like they would on a high-carbohydrate diet. A keto-adapted body automatically starts burning fat for fuel when your blood sugar is low and doesn't bother getting you involved. A high carb diet, on the other hand, manipulates you into eating more calories by sending an urgent "HUNGRY! MUST EAT NOW!" signal to your brain when your blood sugar drops.

For better or worse, there are also some less-than-pleasant symptoms that you may be in ketosis. however, we want to emphasize the fact that experiencing any of the things on the list below is far-and-away much less unpleasant then being overweight and feeling like crap all the time:

  • Keto breath - Biological acetone is a natural byproduct of burning fat for energy. But when you have more acetone in your blood, it can sometimes show up as bad breath in your mouth.
  • Increased thirst - Flushing out stored carbs also flushes out a ton of water weight; your body makes you feel thirsty in order to compensate for this.
  • Tummy issues - Most people's digestive systems have a hard time adjusting to a high-fat diet. Fiber supplements and low carb, high-fiber veggies are a fantastic solution
  • "I thought keto was supposed to be the opposite of this!?!" issues - In the short-term, the lack of carbohydrates plus the lack of ketones present (remember, it's going to take some time for your body to learn how to make them) can equal things like insomnia, fatigue, and brain fog.
